How much or what exercise intensity should you be doing each week?
Check out the guidelines below and take a look at the two info graphs. The UK’s physical activity guidelines recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week. You can also combine both types of activity.

What the guidelines include
- Spreading exercise out over 4 to 5 days a week, or every day.
- Reducing time spent sitting or lying down.
- Breaking up long periods of not moving with some activity.
- Including muscle-strengthening activities twice a week.
Examples of moderate-intensity activity are swimming, brisk walking, and cycling.
Examples of vigorous-intensity activity are running, sprinting, and stair climbing.
Benefits of physical activity
- Reduces risk of a range of diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
- It helps maintain a healthy weight.
- Improves self-esteem.
- Reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety.
